Campaign for ban on the Pakistan rupee launched in Paktia
GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Over a hundred young men have launched an awareness campaign about disadvantages of using the Pakistani rupee in southeastern Paktika province, an official said on Saturday.
The campaigners held placards inscribed with a variety of slogans, like “stop the use of the rupee; afghani is our national currency; buy and purchase goods with the local currency.”
Sultan Ahmadzai, the youth foundation organiser, alleged the Pakistani currency was being used in eastern and southeastern provinces. He is heading the drive to draw the attention of government and people to the issue.
“The rupee is still used in most transaction across the country and the government should take a strong initiative to halt the practice,” he stressed.
Shafiqullah Sahar, another participant of the campaign, agreed the afghani should be given preference over other currencies. Security officials hailed the effort as a positive development.
Police chief Brig. Gen. Qader Gul Zadran promised taking strong steps to stop the circulation of the rupee in the market and encourage the people to use afghani.
