UN envoy commends offensive in Pakistan’s tribal region
At a meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Friday, the UN chief’s special representative commended the sacrifices of Pakistani security forces for peace and stability in the region.
Codenamed Operation Zarb-i-Azab, the offensive has led to clearing large swathes of the strategic region of insurgents, Pakistan claims, pledging to continue with the military action.
Ambassador Tadamichi Yamamoto called on Gen. Sharif at the General Headquarters in the garrison town of Rawalpindi, a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
Matters related to the security situation in Afghanistan and prospects for peace, with particular emphasis on the reconciliation process, were discussed at the meeting, the statement added.
