Iran promises Afghanistan security, uplift assistance
The agreement came during a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Afghanistan’s National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar.
Promotion of development and security in Afghanistan had been Iran's principled policy, Zarif was quoted as telling the visiting advisor, who is currently on a two-day visit to Tehran.
“Afghanistan is Iran's friendly neighbour and its development and security are tantamount to the development and security of Iran,”the foreign minister remarked.
According to IRNA, Zarif stressed the need for boosting Iran-Afghanistan cooperation in all spheres. He also referred to education facilities for Afghan children in Iran.
Atmar acknowledged deeper cooperation with Iran was vital to Afghanistan. He hoped the Chabahar port would provide his landlocked country with access to international waters.
The project would serve as a launching pad for promoting cooperation between Tehran and Kabul, believed Atmar, who is due to meet his Iranian counterpart.
The situation on the border between the two countries, the fight against terrorism and a halt to poppy cultivation and drug trafficking are among the issues on the agenda.
Atmar is visiting the neighbouring country in response to an invitation from Tehran. A week earlier, he visited Russian and sought Moscow’s assistance in the war on terror.
