Taliban overrun Helmand’s Garamser district
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Taliban captured the Garamser district of southern Helmand province, a reliable source said on Friday but police chief said security forces retreated and vacated the district centre and police headquarters.
The source who wished to go unnamed told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban overran the Garamser district this afternoon.
Provincial Council Head Karim Khan Atal said he was unaware of the situation and could not confirm the fall of Garamser.
Police Chief Aqa Noor Kintoz said security forces vacated the government facilities in the district and stationed in public order police base two kilometres from the district centre.
He said Taliban fighters were not present in the district centre and it was a buffer zone currently.
He said security forces were committed to drive the Taliban away from the district and take back the control of Garamser.
