Political rivals clash over land in Mazar-i-Sharif
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): One person was injured after a clash erupted between supporters of two political groups in northern Balkh province on Sunday, an official said.
Deputy police chief Col. Abdul Raziq Qaderi told Pajhwok Afghan News the clash took place in Shadian area on the outskirts of Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital.
He said the clash between people linked to Harakat-i-Islami (Islamic Movement) and Hezb-i-Wahdat Mardom Afghanistan (Unity of Afghan People) broke out over a land dispute and both the sides opened fire at each other.
According to Qaderi, police arrived at the area and made efforts to stop the exchange of fire but to no avail. He said only one person was injured in the clash.
A local influential in the area, Haji Bismillah, confirmed the clash and said the gunfight frightened residents. He asked security forces to book the illegal gunmen.
