Kunar: 2 dead, 49 hurt as rocket hits I-Day function

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Two civilians were killed and 49 others, including three security men, wounded on Thursday when a gathering marking the Independence Day came under a rocket attack in the capital of eastern Kunar province, an official said.

Governor Wahidullah Kalemzai told Pajhwok Afghan News one rocket hit a gathering of people and security officials marking the country’s 97th Independence Day, causing casualties to the participants.

He said the incident took place at around 9:30am, with one rocket landing near the governor’s house where the gathering was being held. Another two rockets landed in other parts of Asadabad, the provincial capital.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Ihsanullah Fazli said one dead body and 50 wounded people had been evacuated to the hospital. One injured person succumbed to his wounds at the hospital and the condition another 12 injured persons was critical, he added.

Maulviinfo-icon Najibullah Haqyar, a resident of the locality, said people had just gathered to celebrate the Independence Day when a rocket landed among them all of a sudden.

He said the enemies of Afghanistaninfo-icon had carried out the attack because they did not want the Afghans to celebrate their achievements.
