Our Afghan efforts continue to pay dividends: Gen Votel
WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): America’s efforts in Afghanistan continued to pay dividends, a top US general said on Tuesday.
“We, along with our coalition partners, have made tremendous investments in that country over the last 15 years,” Gen Joseph Votel, Commander of US Central Command told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.
He said today the Afghans were in the lead, taking the fight to the enemy through their sustainable security strategy.
“They are doing so while dealing with some tough challenges in places like Helmand province, for example,” he said, adding that Afghans continued to demonstrate resiliency and were proving capable of defending their sovereign spaces.
Votel said he recently visited Afghanistan and spent time with NATO Resolute Support mission teams and with corps commanders leading the Afghan forces.
“Across the board, I was extremely impressed by their skill, their determination, and their extraordinarily high level of resiliency,” Votel said.
The CENTCOM chief said recent combined operations against the Islamic State in Khorasan resulted in destruction of 25 percent of their forces.
“With President Obama's decision to keep 8,400 US troops in-country through 2017, and with the additional authorities that have allowed us to target the Islamic State in Khorasan and to accompanying Afghan forces, I'm confident that we will see the Afghans continue to build on the momentum achieved to date,” Votel said.
