36 dead, 28 injured in collision on Kabul-Kandahar highway
QALAT (Pajhwok): A collision on the Kabul-Kandahar has left 34 passengers dead and 21 others injured in southern Zabul province, an official said on Sunday.
Ghulam Jilani Farahi, the deputy police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the predawn accident occurred in the Jaldak area of Shahr-i-Safa district.
A passenger bus crashed into a trailer and both vehicles caught fire as a result, killing 34 people and wounding 21 others. He said 16 the injured were evacuated to the Qalat Civil Hospital and five others to a Kandahar hospital.
However, Zabul Governor Bismillah Afghanmal put the toll at 36 dead and said 28 injured.
The Maiwand Company bus was enroute to Kabul from Kandahar, Farahi said, linking the incident to bad condition of the route and reckless driving.
He said 90 percent of the victims had been burnt and it was hard to establish their identities. The dead could likely include women and children.
