HIA expects signing peace deal with Ghani admin today

HIA expects signing peace deal with Ghani admin today

Sep 10, 2016 - 09:46

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA), led by Gulbadin Hekmatyar, hopes a peace deal with the government will be signed in Kabul today (Saturday).

Negotiations with representatives of the Ashraf Ghani administration had concluded, Hekmatyar’s son Habibur Rahman wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.

Several rounds of peace parleys between the two sides took place some months back. The negotiators agreed on a broad peace strategy, but last-minute rifts delayed the process.

Last month, an HIA delegation -- led by Eng. Amin Karim -- visited Kabul to re-launch talks on sorting out the irritants.

Habibur Rahman wrote the peace pact with the government would be signed later in the day. He congratulated the nation on the expected agreement.

Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani’s deputy spokesman Dawa Khan Minapal confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News significant progress had been made in negotiations with HIA.

However, he pointed out a final agreement had not been reached so far. He would not say that a deal was being inked today.
