Militants on the run in Tirinkot, claims official
KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Militants were pushed back in the battle for Tirinkot, the capital of central Uruzgan province, an official said on Saturday.
Dost Mohammad Nayab, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the fighters had retreated five to 10 kilometers. Gunshots could be heard in some areas, he said.
Security forces would continue chasing the rebels as part of an ongoing clearing operation, he said, adding the situation in the city was returning to normal and few shops had been reopened.
Around 1,200 families displaced by the fighting would get assistance in the near future, the spokesman promised. For technical reasons, operations of some telecommunication networks had been suspended.
