Unknown gunmen kill prayer leader in Nangarhar

Sep 11, 2016 - 13:50

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A prayer leader has been killed by unknown gunmen in the Momand Dara district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Sunday.

Momand Dara district chief Haji Nasim told Pajhwok Afghan News the imaminfo-icon, Gul Bacha, was taken out of his home in Landi Basol area of the district on the night between Saturday and Sunday about 2am before being gunned down.

Nasim said the slain person led prayers at a mosqueinfo-icon in Nazyan district and had been living in Momand Dara district. An investigation into the killing has been launched, but so far no one has been arrested, the official said.

However, a tribal elder in Momand Dara district, Haji Zardad, said the imam had been killed by insurgents. He said Gul Bacha and his three sons were detained by security forces about two weeks ago during a raid on his home.

Later the imam and one of his sons were released and his two sons remained detained. The imam brought stones for construction work at his home yesterday hours before uniformed gunmen arrived and hit him with the same stones before shooting him dead, Haji Zardad said.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the killing that took place the same night when armed militants shot dead the attorney of Balcheragh district of Faryab province.
