Peace deal’s signing with HIA delayed due to Eid holidays

Peace deal’s signing with HIA delayed due to Eid holidays

Sep 12, 2016 - 20:55

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) on Monday said the signing of the agreement with the Gulbuddin Hekmatyar-led Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon was delayed due to some technical issues.

However, the HPC, the body responsible for peace negotiations, said a final draft agreement between the government and the HIA had been concluded. The statement did not provide a date for signing the much-awaited peace deal with the second largest militant group after the Talibaninfo-icon.

President Ashraf Ghani on Monday said the peace deal with the HIA would be finalized soon, a deal that would enable Hekmatyar’s return to politics after years in hiding.

The HPC in a statement said the agreement’s signing was postponed due to Eidul Adha holidays and rejected as baseless reports in the media and social media about differences between the two unity government leaders over the agreement with the HIA, saying the two leaders fully supported the deal’s conclusion.

A source told Pajhwok Afghan News that CEO Abdullah was against some provisions in the agreement and visited the house of HPC head Pir Syed Gilani a day earlier in this regard.

The peace deal with Hekmatyar, if signed, would be symbolic victory for President Ghani who has struggled to revive peace talks with the Taliban.
