Major anti-rebels offensive in Badakhshan soon: Jahid

Major anti-rebels offensive in Badakhshan soon: Jahid

Sep 18, 2016 - 19:07

FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Interior Minister Taj Mohammad Jahid on Sunday said a massive operation against insurgents would be launched soon to drive them from Yamgan and Warduj districts of southeastern Badakhshan province.

Jahid arrived in Faizabad, the capital of Badakhshan, at the head of a high-ranking delegation to assess the security situation here.

The minister met with members of the provincial council members, Ulemainfo-icon Council, tribal elders, influential figures, and civil societyinfo-icon activists and youth. He said the government had firmly decided to retake Yamgan and Warduj districts from rebels.

However, Jahid, addressing around 1,000 people, didn’t provide a specific date for launching the operation, but it would be likely launched next month.

About equipping security forces, he said they used to provide security forces with needed stuff at their disposal in the military sphere.

He said he would meet various groups of people and would pass their suggestions on to the leadership of the unity government.

Ahmad Bashir Samim, the provincial council head, called the security situation in the province as worrying and said security forces weren’t enjoying enough facilities and equipment.

He said security forces had put up stiff resistance against enemy’s attacks; but they had never been encouraged.

While acknowledging Warduj and Yamgan districts’ full control with Talibaninfo-icon, the public representative said Juram, Tagab, Shuhada and Raghistan districts were under serious security threats and being threatened every time by insurgents.

The provincial council head asked the interior minister to devise a plan and conduct an offensive against Taliban to cleanse the two districts of them.

Meanwhile, Jahidullah Payam, representing Badakhshan youth, said people were neither satisfied with the security situation and nor optimistic about military offensives.

He said operations in Warduj and Raghistan districts in early spring and mid-summer had faced with a defeat.

He cited as main reasons behind insecurity in Badakhshan as the province bordering of Pakistaninfo-icon and insurgents’ free movement through it, the Lapis Lazuli’s Mine in Karan-wa-Manjan district and the gold mine in Raghistan under Taliban control.
