Japan vows continued reconstruction aid to Afghanistan
Abe, who spent busy day meetings foreign leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, held out the pledge during a phone call with President Ashraf Ghani.
Kyodo news agency reported Abe spoke with Ghani on Monday, saying Japan would keep extending support to Afghanistan.
Ghani was quoted as saying that he would work on improving public security and implementing administrative reforms.
The president, who was scheduled to meet the Japanese premier, has pulled out of the UN General Assembly session.
In New York, Abe met the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Than. Japan will begin issuing three-year multiple-entry visas to holders of Qatari passports.
