Italian defence minister in Herat, promises continued support
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Italian Minister of Defence on Wednesday arrived in western Herat province, saying her country was committed to its pledges and implementing projects it had earlier promised in the province.
Roberta Pinotti, at the head of a delegation comprising military officials and Italy’s ambassador to Afghanistan, visited Herat and held a meeting with the provincial governor and some local officials at the historic Herat Citadel.
She said her country wanted preservation of gains Afghanistan had achieved so far and her country would continue to support Afghanistan’s development.
During the trip, Minister Pinotti viewed historic sites and tourist attractions in Herat and said: “My visit to Herat City is a sign of the city’s improved security.”
She said Italy had invested a lot in the province and was committed to its promises including the expansion of the airport, asphalting of the Herat-Chisht-i-Sharif road, railways line and Herat’s Ring Road construction.
Governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi welcomed the Italian minister and the delegation accompanying her. Rahimi on behalf of his administration and people conveyed his condolences to the visiting minister over recent earthquake.
Rahimi said they were indebted to Italy for its military support and assistance in the field of development and reconstruction sectors over the past 15 years in Herat.
“Afghan people are fighting against international terrorism and thus defeating terrorism in Afghanistan will be the start of defeating terrorism in the globe.”
He asked the international community to provide assistance to Afghanistan in the field of military to eliminate factors behind insurgency and terrorism and bring about peace to Afghanistan.
Rahimi asked Italy to help Afghanistan’s air forces target terrorists and drug traffickers. Italy over the past one decade has invested 200 million euro in different fields in Herat, Rahimi said, thanking the country for its new promise of continued support.
