Selection committee to start work soon: Murtazawi
KABUL (Pajhwok): In compliance with presidential instructions, the selection committee would soon start its work and a date for hold parliamentary and district council elections would be specified after new election commissioners were appointed, an official said on Saturday.
Shah Hussain Murtazawi, deputy spokesman to the president, told a press conference here that electoral reform and a date for the selection committee to start work were discussed at a meeting President Ashraf Ghani chaired on Saturday at the Presidential Palace.
“After two years of challenges and discussions, the election law was approved a few days back and today the president directed the selection committee to start work at the earliest possible. The administrative affairs office has sent letters to the institutions concerned asking them to introduce their members for membership of the selection committee.”
The institutions were scheduled to introduce their representatives tomorrow (Sunday), Murtazawi said, adding after starting work by the selection committee, new members of the two electoral bodies would also be introduced.
The meeting at the Presidential Palace also conferred on security for the long-delayed elections and funding.
The government is expected to spend partially on the elections from its own budget and is hoping for foreign aid.
Murtazawi said President Ghani and CEO Abdullah were likely to meet from 5 to 6pm to discuss various topics.
