KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon leader Gulbadin Hekmatyar were set to sign the peace agreement on Thursday, an official said on Tuesday.

The peace agreement between the government and the HIA was inked last week after negotiations lasting two years.

On behalf of the government, the agreement was signed by High Peace Council (HPC) Chairman Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani and National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar.

A reliable source at the unity government told Pajhwok Afghan News the peace deal would be signed by Hekmatyar through a video conference from an unknown place.

He said President Ghani would sign the peace deal during an organized gathering at the Presidential Palace on Thursday.

Nearly 1,000 people would participate in the gathering being arranged at the Presidential Palace. High-ranking government officials, former president Hamid Karzai, political leaders and hundreds of supporters of HIA had been invited to the deal’s signing ceremony.

A statement from Karzai’s office said HIA delegation head Mohammad Amin Karim met with the former president at his office on Tuesday and invited him on behalf of Gulbadin Hekmatyar to the deal’s signing ceremony expected to take place on Thursday.
