1,000 commandos in Uruzgan amid looming offensive
TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A thousand fresh commandos have arrived in central Uruzgan province amid a looming offensive against the insurgents, an official said on Thursday.
Capt. Matiullah, commander of the troops, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had had come to the province to conduct a special operation against the militants aimed at retaking areas from the Taliban.
He hoped that the Special Forces, equipped with modern weapons and all necessary equipment, would be able to conduct successful night raids. He assured residents Taliban would be flushed out and government writ enforced.
Earlier, the governor had said reinforcements would arrive in the province to counter Taliban attacks and wrest back the areas they had captured. He said a massive operation was needed in the province to beat the Taliban.
Heavy fighting between the Taliban and security forces have been underway over the past two months, with the militants closing in on the provincial capital and threatening vital security sites.
