Govt fulfills 50pc of free speech promises: survey

Sep 29, 2016 - 21:13

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A survey conducted by the Afghanistaninfo-icon National Union of Journalists (ANUJ) says the national unity government has failed in fulfilling half of its pledges regarding the freedom of expression in the country.

The survey that took place this ongoing solar yearinfo-icon was participated by 12,000 journalists associated with different media outlets in 11 provinces.

Fahim Dashti, ANUJ president, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had handed over a draft document regarding the freedom of expression to the two presidential candidates before the election went to a second round and they had agreed to implementation of the draft soon after taking charge.

“We hoped the government would materalise the pledges they made before and during the election, but it has been two years since the unity government came to power and we decided to evaluate how many of the pledges the government has fulfilled,” said Dashti.

He said they distributed questioners to 1,088 journalists and half of them replied that the government had failed to implement its promises.

He said journalists who believed the government had failed in implementing its promises on the freedom of press cited insecurity and lawlessness behind the failure. They also called the situation not good for journalists.

Dashti asked the government to play an effective role in ensuring media freedom and encouraging foreign assistance for Afghan media at the Brussels conference.
