US expects Afghan aid pledges at Brussels conference
More than $3 billion a year in international development support through 2020 might be pledged to Afghanistan at the event, the US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan said.
The conference in Belgian capital will be hosted by the European Union and Afghanistan on October 4-5. Around 70 countries and 30 global organisations are expected to be in attendance.
US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Olson linked the assistance to progress by the Afghan government in implementing reforms, including eradication of corruption.
Kabul might announce ambitiousmedium-term plans to minimise reliance on donor support and stimulate economic growth, he said at a forum in Washington.
