1,263 persons with 185 tonnes of drugs detained this year
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Interior on Sunday said 1,263 individuals have been detained in connection with more than 185 tonnes of drugs this year when 22 heroin-making factories destroyed.
MoI’s counter-narcotics department deputy head, Lt. Gen. Baz Mohammad Ahmadi told reporters here that the drugs confiscated included heroin, opium morphine, chemicals used in making drugs, alcoholic drinks and others.
According to him, 34 tonnes of the drugs were seized a week back separately in Nangarhar’s Shirzad and Khogyani districts.
He said police this year confiscated 219 different models of vehicles, 138 various weapons and 172 mobile and satellite phones from drug traffickers.
He said the arrested individuals also included nine policemen, four Afghan National Army (ANA)’s soldiers, two Pakistani nationals, two Iranians and 38 women.
He said two policemen affiliated to MoI counter-narcotics department had been so far killed and another seven wounded in line of duty during the current year.
According to the Ministry of Counternarcotics, since the solar year 1382 till 1394, at least 19,000 persons had been detained on drug trafficking related charges in Afghanistan and 2,800 tonnes of different kinds of drugs destroyed.
Billions of dollars have been spent on the fight against narcotics over the past 14 years in Afghanistan, however, a United Nations 2015’s survey shows the drugs cultivation in 2015 was 23 times more as compared to 2001 and production rate 18 times greater.
Currently more than 90 percent of drugs are being produced in Afghanistan and over 3.6 million individuals 12 percent of the country’s population are addicted to drugs in the country.
