KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday called on Afghanistaninfo-icon’s neighboring countries to extend essential support to the war-torn country in its quest for peace and stability.

Ban Ki-moon, during the day two of Brussels conference in Belgium, said the conference was aimed at long-term participation in Afghanistan’s efforts at achieving peace and gradual development. The UN wanted to renew its pledges with Afghanistan in this regard, he added.

Afghan government officials were on a bright path towards having a better future for Afghanistan, Ban Ki-moon said, adding Afghans were committed to seriously fighting against corruption and bringing about needed reforms in all sectors.

“Despite many challenges, Afghanistan made a remarkable progress recently; as an example they established a judicial centre and procurement authority to prevent corruption. These actions are worth mentioning and should be appreciated.”

For even better transparency and accountability and paying serious attention to public services, Afghanistan has the opportunity to consider developmental affairs in the next four years and the UN was ready to assist Afghanistan in this regard, he added.

The secretary-general said the Brussels conference was aimed at enabling Afghanistan to implement development programmes, which could bring basic changes into people’s lives and shorten the gap between the government and the Afghan people.

He said the conference would also discuss Afghan womeninfo-icon’s situation in Afghanistan and ways how the Afghan women could avail the existing opportunities.

Currently many Afghans have migrated to foreign countries and more than one million have been displaced internally, the UN chief, adding in such a time it was necessary that the international community work jointly with Afghanistan to cope with the current issues.

He called on all assisting countries to provide Afghanistan with needed help tackle poverty and other issues the country faced.

He called on regional countries to play a significant role in Afghanistan’s stability and durable peace and said, “I call on Afghanistan’s neighboring countries to avail opportunities and work with Afghanistan for mutual interests and better future.”

Ban Ki-moon said, regional countries besides strengthening economic relations with Afghanistan should also perform actions that lead to mutual confidence and create good ties.
