44 Afghan trainees go missing in US in 22 months
KABUL (Pajhwok): Dozens of Afghan security personnel coming to the United States for military training have gone missing since the start of 2015,a Pentagon official was quoted as saying on Thursday.
Speaking to Reuters, Defense Department spokesman Adam Stump said the whereabouts of 44 Afghan soldiers remained unknown.
Eight of the Afghan trainees have disappeared from military bases since the start if the current month. The frequency of the trainees going missing has caused concerns among US officials.
US military authorities are looking at ways of strengthening screening procedures for the training programmed. To minimizes chances of an individual Afghan willingly absconding from training.
One unnamed defense official told Reuters there was no evidence that any of those who had absconded had committed crimes or posed a threat to the United States.
Since 2002, the US has allocated more than $60 billion to train and equip Afghan forces. Under the training programme, troops from around the world come to the US to improve joint operation capabilities.
