40 insurgents killed as reinforcements reach Lashkargah
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Forty Taliban have been killed in Lashkargah clashes as fresh commandoes and quick response force personnel arrived in southern Helmand province to drive militants from Lashkargah, an official said on Tuesday.
Capt. Ahmad Shakil Tasal, deputy spokesman for the 215th Maiwand Military Corp, said 400 fresh troops landed in Lashkargah today. More tanks and other military equipment have been shifted as preparations were completed for a counter-insurgency offensive.
He said fierce clashes were underway in Babaji and Chah Anjir localities. Security forces also suffered causalities but the exact number was not declared.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed several security personnel were killed and wounded in Chah Anjir clashes. At least 14 policemen and civilians were killed and wounded during a Taliban attack on a police station in the limits of the 2nd police district of Lashkargah.
Lashkargah is divided into four police districts. With the 4th district already under their control, the militants are staging attacks to seize more parts of the provincial capital.
