FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): Local educationinfo-icon officials say more than 80 percent of schools in western Ghorinfo-icon province are without buildings and students continue their studies in the open.

Education Director Sebghatullah Akbari expressed concern over the education process in the province, alleging the government paid no attention to the construction of school buildings.

He said 636 of 850 schools in Ghor had no buildings and students had to study in the open, an issue that has created hurdles to the education process.

“The weather in the beginning and end of the academic year in Ghor usually gets cold and students in such situation cannot study, shortage of books for 7th to 12 grade students was another problem,” he added.

About shortage of teachers, he said, “Ghor has 181,000 students but they currently needed 2,500 more teachers. There were some schools that have only one teacher,”

Akbari also expressed concern over growing insecurity and presence of illegal armed men in the province and said poor security situation was another reason that faced the education process with problems.

Abdul Hamid Natiqi, a provincial council member, complained against the school building issue and said, “When there is no school building, teacher and books, then we should not expect our children are getting education,”

He said not even a single school building had been constructed in a year in Ghor province. “It is injustice to education as 80 percent of schools there have no buildings, there are not enough teachers and books,” he added.

Students including girls in the capital of Ghor and Pasaband, Charsada, Dolina, Shahrak, Saghra, Tiora and Tolak districts are deprived of education while salaries of teachers ended up to irresponsible gunmen's pockets, Natiqi said.

One of the teachers in Ghor, who wished not to be named, said: “Our school has no building, tents or carpets. All students of 7th to 12th grades are in need of books. Each class has only one teacher for all subjects,”

The source said parents did not show any interest in sending their children to schools, looking at the current situations of schools.
