No link between Afghanistan & Kashmir: White House
WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The White House on Wednesday dismissed Pakistani effort to link peace in Afghanistan with resolving the Kashmir issue, saying there was no link between the two issues.
“We certainly do not believe that the situation in Afghanistan is linked with the situation in Kashmir. We are very concerned about bringing peace, stability and eventually prosperity to all Afghans,” a White House official said.
“It is a very, very tall order,” said Peter Lavoy, senior director for South Asia at the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House,in his remarks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Afghans and Afghanistan had been afflicted by war and human sufferings for too many decades and it was the priority of the Obama administration to provide political, economic and security support to the Afghans, he added.
Referring to the recent Brussels conference, Lavoy said everyone in the world recognised the importance of bringing peace and stability to Afghanistan and the international community was committed to working together in this regard.
Lavoy’s remarks gains significance in view of recent statements made by two special envoys of Pakistan on Kashmir that the US should not expect to bring peace to Afghanistan until the Kashmir issue was resolved. The Afghan government has also objected to the view.
