Balkhi satisfied with situation of Afghan refugees in Iran
KABUL (Pajhwok): The situation of Afghan refugees in Iran is better than in any other country around the globe, the minister concerned said on Sunday.
The situation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan and European countries was critical, Syed Hussain Alimi Balkhi said in an interview with an Iranian media outlet.
Balkhi told IRNA he had never said the Afghan refugees were faced with a grim situation in the neighbouring country. He blamed a local daily for misquoting him on the issue.
He went on to acknowledge the Afghan refugees in Pakistan and European countries were being expelled and denied no access to essential services.
The minister added 400-500 refugees without identification papers were being sent back to Afghanistan by Iranian police daily.
Of the seven million Afghans living abroad, Balkhi explained, six millions were residing in Iran and Pakistan. Fifty percent of the Afghans in the two countries are said to be illegal.
