Nangarhar blind people demand special school
JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Blind people have demanded the establishment of a special school to resolve their issues regarding education in eastern Nangarhar province.
The visually impaired people organized a gathering aimed at appealing for their rights while observing the White Cane Safety Day here.
They called cultural restrictions, non-provision of their rights at homes and problems in their education as hurdles to their welfare and living style.
The Nangarhar Blind Union Head, Fazal Ghani Bashardost, on the sidelines of the gathering told Pajhwok Afghan News the government was yet to keep its promise of establishing a special school for the blinds.
“The education minister promised me and told me to bring a letter from local education department; but the education department officials do not cooperate with me in this regard.”
He said if blind people were educated, their concerns would be eliminated and they wouldn’t consider themselves as burden on the society as they would be able to protect and live by themselves.
Qari Ibad-ul-Halim, a blind who was provided with a white cane by the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA), attended the gathering.
He called the white cane as helpful as eyes and said the cane had 40 benefits if learnt it would help the blind walk without any difficulty.
Hamidullah, 16, said he had little learned reading Braille--a form of written language for blind people—at SCA but his studies remained incomplete due to economic issues.
“The government should set up a special school for us with transport service so we have education.”
Meanwhile, SCA officials said they had launched efforts at facilitating blind and disabled people to jointly get education with healthy people. They said if separate areas were established for the blind and disabled, they would feel isolated.
The Nangarhar Disabled Union said at least 1,331 blind people facing severe problems have been registered with the union from eastern Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman provinces.
