20 deminers kidnapped at gunpoint in Logar
KABUL (Pajhwok): Gunmen kidnapped 20 deminers in the capital of central Logar province on Wednesday, an official said.
Crime branch police chief Col. Mohammad Jan Abid told Pajhwok Afghan News the 20 workers of Sterling Global Operations were kidnapped in Elyas village of Pul-i-Alam city this noon.
“The deminers were traveling in a mini bus when unidentified armed men abducted them towards an unknown location,” he said.
Governor’s spokesman, Salim Saleh, confirmed the incident and said local tribal elders had been engaged to secure release of the abducted deminers.
Ahmadullah, a resident of Elyas village, said the armed men kidnapped the deminers around 10am.
“Eight masked gunmen on four motorcycles stopped the mini bus and took away all on board, I don’t know exact number of the people kidnapped,” he said.
Earlier, a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid had said that they created no problems to deminers.
Workers of Sterling Global Operations had previously been kidnapped several times this year, but they were released after a temporary hostage.
The demining organization has been operating in Pul-i-Alam and Mohammad Agha district of Logar over the past two years.
