HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Water and Energy Minister Ali Ahmad Usmani on Wednesday inaugurated reconstructioninfo-icon work on a major canal in western Herat province.

Usmani said that the Worldinfo-icon Bank (WB)-funded project would cost 110 million afghanis and take 1,000 days to complete in two phases. He said the canal’s reconstruction would help prevent water wastage and irrigate 4,000 hectares of land.

Eng. Noor Ahmad Barz, director of the Harirod-Murghab river basin, said the canal originating from the Harirod River was 20 kilometers long and eight meters wide, irrigating lands in Shukiban and Zandajan districts.

Tribal elder Haji Abdul Samad said: “We avail irrigation water for six months of a year. This area has 32,000 acres arable land and I hope more areas will come under irrigation with reconstruction of the canal”.

The Energy and Water Minister said that a 870-meter retaining wall had been reconstructed along the Enjeel stream to prevent people's homes and land from being flooded. The project cost 12.7m afghanis, he said.
