MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A military commander says Russia has clearly indicated its support to the Taliban but the Afghan forces are fully prepared to defend the motherland under any circumstances.

Earlier the Russian president’s special representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov has justified the Taliban’s armed struggle against the presence of US forces in Afghanistan.

The US foreign secretary during a trip to the United Kingdom (UK) has expressed concern over Russian support to the Taliban.

Russia is hosting another international conference on Afghanistan on April 14 to be attended by representatives from 12 countries including the US. Afghanistan has also confirmed participation in the conference in Moscow.

The 209 Shaheen Military Corps commander in the north, Gen. Mohammad Katawazai said the Defence Ministry would concentrate on elimination of terrorists in the north and northeast, including Faryab province, in the first three months of the new solar year.

He accused Russia of providing arms to the Taliban in the northern part of the country. A Taliban leader Mullah Salam who was recently killed had been receiving arms from Tajikistan.

The commander said Afghan security forces’ capabilities had improved and they were prepared to defend the country.
