Drone strikes violation of UN charter: Sharif
ISLAMABAD (PAN): On the verge of being inaugurated as prime minister for a record third term, Nawaz Sharif on Friday expressed strong reservations about US drone strikes in Pakistan's restive northwestern tribal region.
The drone attacks were not only a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty but were also against international law and the UN charter, he said in a statement from the media cell of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N.
Sharif's statement came a day after the Pakistani Taliban retracted a ceasefire offer to the incoming government after a drone assault killed the outlawed group's deputy chief Waliur Rehman in North Waziristan.
In his maiden speech to the National Assembly, Sharif is expected to touch on foreign policy issues, including drone attacks in tribal areas and regional peace, particularly with reference to Afghanistan.
