JALALABAD (PAN border, an official said on Sunday.

Governor Tamim Nuristani told Pajhwok Afghan News the three-hour gunbattle erupted in the Gordesh area  of Kamdesh district late on Saturday evening.

Four policemen and 13 insurgents were killed in the firefight that also left 24 Taliban and four security personnel wounded, according to the governor, who said the clash was triggered by attacks on two posts in the area.

Acting police chief, Ghulam Farooq, alleged most of the fighters had crossed into the area from Pakistan. The guerrillas’ bodies were in police custody, he said, adding the posts were destroyed as a result of the assaults.

On the other hand, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi claimed capturing the two security posts and killing eight policemen in the Kamdesh battle. He said the insurgents had also seized police weapons.
