KABUL‘s political office in Qatar, Islamabad remains engaged with insurgent leaders, a media report said on Friday.

Pakistan government negotiators were in negotiations with Taliban leaders to convince them to enter talks with US and Afghan officials, Dawn reported, quoting an unnamed official as saying: “The process is continuing. In fact it is in everyone’s interest that the process remains alive.”

The spate over Taliban’s flag and their office nomenclature infuriated the Karzai administration, which cancelled the visit of its negotiators to Qatar and suspended talks with the US on the Bilateral Security Arrangement.

As a result of a fresh diplomatic effort, the Afghan government and the US have voiced their willingness to join the Qatar process, the Taliban leaders have not yet responded to their offer.

On Thursday, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said: “We have affirmed our commitment to considering all possible measures that we believe would contribute to the reconciliation process in the larger interest of peace in Afghanistan.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron, who is expected to arrive in Islamabad on Saturday, would exchange notes with his hosts on the Afghan reconciliation campaign, the newspaper said.
