HERAT CITY (PAN): President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday ordered the sacking of the Herat police chief, directing the interior ministry to bring basic changes to the provincial security department.

The Presidential Palace said Karzai had asked the interior ministry to take effective measures for overcoming insecurity, including increasing kidnap incidents, in the western province.

A statement from his office said the president directed Syed Abdul Ghafar — an experienced police officer who has been named as the new police chief for Heart — to ensure better security in the province and punish the elements behind the unrest.

A day earlier, industrial workers, moneychangers, doctors, jewellers and traders went on a strike in protest against the rising kidnappings in the province. They demanded the replacement of police head Brig. Gen. Syed Aqa Saqib.

On Tuesday, Gen. Bismillah Mohammadi, the acting interior minister, headed a delegation, including Wolesi Jirga lawmakers, to Herat.

Police spokesman, Col. Noor Khan Nekzad, said the governor had just returned from a foreign trip. The team visited the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries office for talks with strikers.
