NANGARHAR, Dec 27, 2011: The number of literate people in eastern provinces of the country is expected to reach 29,000 over the next three years, officials said on Tuesday.
Recently, 5,120 people -- 2411 in Nangarhar, 1088 in Kunar, 1241 in Laghman and 380 in Nuristan -- completed literacy courses, the Nangarhar public works and social affairs director said.
Abdul Hakim Sherzad told Pajhwok Afghan News 25 percent of the trainees were females, with 1,700 being imparted technical skills. He said 700 people had already completed literacy courses.
