Kuchis evacuation from Behsud begins

Najib Khelwatgar - Jul 17, 2008 - 19:22

KABUL (PAN): Vice president Karim Khalili on Monday said the situation in Behsud was calm after president Hamid Karzai ordered evacuation of Kuchis from the district in central Maidan Wardak province.

Addressing at a press conference on Monday Khalili said the Kuchis evacuation was temporary and they were seeking a permanent resolution for the dispute.

He had suspended official meetings for past 20 days and had also presented his resignation to President Hamid Karzai to seek a solution for the crisis.

Several efforts by the government remained unfruitful, he added, a delegation had been deployed to the area to investigate into the dispute.

The dispute between Hazaras minorities and Kuchis began in the district after Hazaras claimed the Kuchis forcibly entered into their areas and killed and injured several residents.

He complained almost 7000 families had been forced out of their areas in the dispute.

Distributing plots for Kuchis had also been ordered in the president decree, he added, a commission had to work on the identifying areas for distribution.

The blame game started from Hazaras and Kuchis on the dispute since few weeks.

MP Muhammad Muhqeq an MP from Kabul who went on hunger strike since few days to protest government laxity to resolve the problem on Sunday said 13 Hazaras were killed and six more were missing in the recent clash between the two minorities in the area.

Kabul residents expect a demonstration by Hazaras in Kabul on Tuesday.
