Rockets hit Kunduz polling centre

Abdul Matin Sarfaraz - Aug 20, 2009 - 12:20

TALOQAN/KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): Suspected militants fired rockets into a polling centre in northern Kunduz province while a bomb blast took place near the police headquarters in Takhar, officials said on Thursday.

Two rockets hit the Hazrat Ali High School housing the polling centre in Taloqan at 8:30am. Although officials insisted the attack caused no casualties, a Pajhwok reporter saw an 11-year-old boy lying injured at the scene.

Nisar Ahmad, one of the voters, said: "I was casting my vote when a rocket landed close to the polling centre. The ensuing blast created panic among people, but they continued to cast ballots."

Governor's spokesman Mehboobullah Syedi said the process of voting was in progress without any disruption.

Meanwhile, explosives placed in a hand-cart detonated near the police headquarters in Takhar province this morning. Police chief Brigadier General Ziauddin Mahmoodi confirmed the blast.

He said a wall of the police headquarters was partially damaged and so was the attorney's office. The blast caused no casualties, explained the police chief.
