NOC president, SG elected

Mohammad Jawad Sharifzada - Sep 28, 2009 - 18:30

KABUL (PAN): General Mohammad Zahir Aghbar has been elected as head of Afghanistan National Olympic Committee (NOC) for four years as a result of direct polls.

The elections were conducted in the presence of representatives of the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia in Kabul.

Fareed Ahmad Siddiqi, Aghbar's rival in the contest, received only one of the 26 votes cast. Initially, seven people were in the run for the position but five of them quit the race.

After winning the election, Aghbar promised he would do his bit to improve the sport environment in the country. Calling his election as an important step towards the promotion of sports, he added Afghanistan would have the opportunity to take part and vote in Asian and International Olympic Committee meetings.

Earlier on, Afghanistan participated as a guest in such meetings. Jan Elim Hasani, who defeated his two challengers, was elected as NOC secretary-general.
