KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Five policemen and two civilians were killed and another 19 people injured in a car bomb attack that rocked Kandahar city, the capital of southern Kandahar province, on Sunday, a senior official said.

The attack took place at around 12pm near the police headquarters in the Sanzari Bus Stand area, Governor Dr. Toryalai Weesa told newsmen.

The dead included a child while three others children and two women were injured in the blast, he said, adding the injured were rushed to the Mirwais Hospital, with many of them in critical condition.

The governor, strongly condemning the attack as un-Islamic act, said it was carried out by elements who did not want peace in the country.

The powerful blast also smashed the windowpanes of several nearby houses and offices, including the Pajhwok Afghan News regional bureau.

The attack drew condemnation from President Hamid Karzai, saying it was the act of Afghanistan’s enemies.

A statement issued from his office said the President was deeply shocked over the attack. “Terrorists should know they would never reach their targets with such cowardly acts,” the statement quoted Karzai saying.

“The enemies of Afghanistan once again attacked a populated area and showed their enmity with the Afghans.”
