27 killed including security men killed in new violence

KABUL): Nearly 27 rebels, including six Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers, were killed during separate security incidents in the past 24 hours across the country, officials said on Saturday.

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) statement said the soldiers were killed during different security attacks such as roadside bombings and militants’ assaults in Ghazni, Paktia, Kandahar and Badghis and Parwan provinces.

Meanwhile, four other soldiers were also wounded in the incidents but the ministry did not reveal their conditions.

In addition, a large quantity of weapons, explosives and 15 anti-vehicle mines belonging to the insurgents were seized by the ANA soldiers during the operation

across the country, the ministry said.

Recently, the casualties among Afghan security personnel have surged due to insurgent’s attacks.

Elsewhere, an ANA officer, along with his wife and brother were killed, while his six family members were injured, when an unidentified gunmen attack them in central Parwan province.

The attack was carried out late Friday night when the victim Mirza Mir and his family members were on their way to Kabul, said Maj. Abdul Hanan Kohistani, the provincial police spokesman.

Mirza’s two sons, both daughters and his two cousins were injured in the gun attack. His wife and brother were killed.

Kohistani said the injured victims were rushed to Panjsher emergency hospital and two of them were in critical condition.

So far no insurgent group has claim responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, in separate security incident in southern Helmand province, 15 Taliban fighters and a police officer were killed, while two other policemen wounded.

Last night, the insurgents attacked police checkpoints in the Regi, Musalmani and Mazraban areas on the outskirts of Musa Qala district, leading to the casualties, said Farid Ahmadi, provincial police spokesman.

He said the security forces were earlier tipped off about Taliban’s plan to attack the checkpoints that led to the fighters’ defeat.  Most of the rebels’ dead bodies were left in the area.

He added rebels also attacked a police checkpoint in the Tarko area of Grishk district, where a police officer was killed. He was the only person manning the checkpoint, while 10 of his colleagues had gone to the district centre.

In another search operation in the province, four individuals were detained along with an AK-47 assault rifle and two pistols, after found guilty of killing policemen and planning roadside bombings, said Ahmadi.

Besides, six Taliban fighters were killed and two others injured when Afghan and foreign troops conducted raids in Mohammad Agha and Baraki Barak districts, in central Logar, said Col. Raees Khan Sadeq, provincial deputy police chief.

He added in Barakirajan and Sajawand clash, four Taliban fighters were killed and another injured — when troops targeted a residence where rebels had gathered to plan attacks on Afghan and foreign soldiers, he noted.

 Meanwhile, Col. Ahmad Nabi Ahmadzai, Mohammad Agha district police chief confirmed to Pajhwok that two insurgents were killed during the operation in the Deulak area of the district.

He said no civilians or security personnel were hurt in the operation.
