KABUL): The deputy speaker of the lower house on Saturday warned that lawmakers could bring no-confidence motions against nearly a dozen ministers if they failed to appear before the assembly on Monday.
The Wolesi Jirga on Thursday voted to summon the 11 Cabinet members for failing to use less than half of the development funds released to their ministries as part of the 2011 budget.
Deputy Speaker Haji Abdul Qadir, a powerful lawmaker from eastern Nangarhar province, told reporters the government had sent the legislature a letter, saying three of the ministers did not hold their current portfolios last year.
However, Qadir insisted all those summoned had to appear before the national assembly because the matter was of a great importance with regard to the country’s development.
Ministers of defence, interior and urban development had not been in their current positions last year.
Qadir said a minister who did not turn up could face a no-confidence vote, arguing the Cabinet members were answerable to parliament and duty-bound to comply with its decisions.
