KABUL and Turkey on Sunday celebrated the 92nd anniversary of their friendship treaty signed on March 1, 1921, with the Turkish envoy to Afghanistan reiterating Ankara’s long-lasting commitment to the ally.
Ambassador Bassat Ozturk told a gathering marking the anniversary in Kabul that his country remained committed to assisting Afghanistan in diverse fields, especially in the education sector, after the withdrawal of foreign troops by the end of 2014.
Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul, his information and culture counterpart Syed Makhdom Rahin and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
Rassoul said cooperation between the two countries had highly increased, praising Turkey as the only true friend. He said the friendship treaty had further cemented the centuries-old friendly ties between the two nations.
He said a large number of Afghan students were sent to Turkey each year for higher studies, while Turkish doctors and experts provided most needed services to the Afghans. Ankara played a proactive role in enhancing the capacity of the country’s education sector and the youth, he said.
Ozturk said his country would spare no effort at bringing about peace to Afghanistan, saying Turkey regarded Afghanistan’s development as its own prosperity. He said Turkey was determined to continued contributions in the future to ensure a secure, stable and welfare Afghanistan.
