KABUL) The Ministry of Finance (MoF) on Wednesday welcomed the Special Tribunal’s verdict in the Kabul Bank fraud case, saying it represented a major achievement of Afghan law-enforcement authorities and the judiciary.

The judgment showed Afghan legal institutions had the capacity and the will to prosecute challenging criminal cases, the ministry said, calling bank scandal the largest and most complex financial crime in the history of Afghanistan.

A statement from MoF said the ruling had proved wrong many observers who doubted the case would go forward, much less come to a successful conclusion.  Thirty months ago, when the bank collapsed, Afghanistan had little capacity to detect, investigate or prosecute this type of fraud, it added.

“We recognise that such crimes represent a serious threat to Afghanistan’s long-term prosperity and we have taken stern measures to curb such conduct.  On February 28, the Cabinet approved a new strategy to curb economic crime and empowered a senior-level task force to coordinate efforts in this regard.”
