KABUL): A Pakistani diplomat has urged the US to stop drone attacks in its tribal region, saying the strikes are damaging America’s image, a media report said on Saturday.
Outgoing Ambassador Sherry Rehman, who resigned after the May 11 elections, suggested on Friday bilateral trade should be the basis for the relations between Islamabad and the Washington
According to APP news agency, she was addressing at a farewell party at the Pakistani embassy. Former CIA chief David Petraeus, who also attended the ceremony, praised Rehman’s role in improving ties between the two countries.
Her call came hours after a senior Defense Department official ruled out any change in the broad Congressional authorisation under which the military conducts the drone strikes against terrorist targets.
Assistant Defense Secretary Michael Sheehan said of the Authorization for the Use of Military Force passed by Congress in 2001: “Right now … it serves its purpose.”
