KABUL’s 12th president in a one-sided election earlier in the week.
Mamnoon was elected on Tuesday as Pakistan’s new president, bagging 277 votes from the National Assembly and the Senate. He replaces Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
“I’m pleased extending you greetings on behalf of the Afghan people on your election as president of the brotherly country,” Karzai wrote in his felicitation message to Mamnoon.
Afghanistan and Pakistan being neighbouring countries shared the same destiny, the president said, adding the regional situation had similar effects on both nations.
Kabul was ready to cooperate with Islamabad in efforts at achieving progress and prosperity for the two nations, he said, extending his best wishes to Mamnoon and Pakistan.
