JALALABAD (Pajhwok): At least nine militants have been killed in a drone attack by NATO-led troops in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Monday.
Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Fazal Ahmad Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) aircraft struck a vehicle carrying insurgents in Batikot district.
The incident happened in an area between Anbar Khani and Garabawi areas late on Sunday, he said, adding the pick-up the fighters were travelling contained explosives.
Resident Ainullah Rasuli said six militants in the pick-up were killed in one drone attack and three others on foot in a second strike.
One security official, who did not want to be named, said a local insurgent commander named Shaheen was among the dead. He added the explosives in the vehicle were destroyed as a result of the raid.
The riverside area between Batikot and Momand Dara districts has long been plagued by the insurgency. Fighters roam about the area freely in broad daylight.
