MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Police on Sunday claimed four persons, including two women, had died after drinking tainted liquor in northwestern Faryab province, but a doctor said a gas leak had caused the deaths.
Police Chief Col. Mohammad Naeem said the four were found dead in a house situated on the Air Port Road in the second police district of Maimana, the provincial capital.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News preliminary investigations suggested they had died after drinking the locally made toxic alcohol at a party.
Police had shifted their bodies along with a surviving three-month-old baby to a nearby hospital, he added.
But Dr. Samir Inayat, the forensic laboratory head at the hospital, said the deaths had resulted from suffocation caused by a gas leak.
However, the police chief disputed his claim, saying the gas leak could have suffocated to death the baby as well.
Separately, unidentified gunmen shot dead Arbab Islam, an influential person, in Pashtunkot district of the province.
Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, a Taliban’s spokesman, claimed responsibility for Islam’s assassination, accusing him of working for the government.
