SHARAN (Pajhwok): For the first time, civilian flights have been started to and from an airport formerly used by ISAF forces in Sharan, the capital of southern Paktika province, an official said on Monday.
Constructed by ISAF, foreign troops had been using the airport for military flights until they left the province, Governor Mohibullah Samim told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He called the launch of civilian flights between Kabul and Paktika a big achievement, saying a privately-owned airline “Ofaq-i-Sharq” would conduct one flight a week and the service would help resolve problems being faced by traders and passengers.
Local residents also expressed their pleasure over the inauguration of the airport for civilian flights. A Sharan resident, Maulavi Masoom, who attended the inaugural ceremony, hoped government officials would now be able to visit the province and listen to problems facing its residents.
He said many Afghans lived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and they would be able to reach home easily through the airport.
He said it remained risky to travel by road due to security threats and the airport would help people travel safely to their destinations.
