KHOST CITY (Pajhwok): Education Department officials on Saturday urged the government to address its problems, including a shortage of teachers, in southeastern Khost province.
Addressing a new academic year ceremony in Khost City, Deputy Director of Education Matiullah Fazli said: “The shortage of teachers is the biggest problem and lack of school building in Khost.”
They needed 400 teachers, but the Ministry of Education had allowed the appointment of only 60, he said, adding the problem was more acute in far-flung areas of the province.
Last year, more than 60,000 students were enrolled, he recalled, saying as many would be admitted in the new solar year. Forty percent of the new students will be girls.
During the current Persian year, 18 more schools would be opened, taking the number of schools in Khost to 350, the deputy director added.
Governor Abdul Jabbar Naeemi said the number of students across the province had risen to 350,000 as a result of the government’s efforts. He called upon teachers to stay committed to their profession and arm students with sound knowledge.
He asked the people to support government’s efforts for promoting the cause of education and send girls to school.
On the other hand, teachers asked the authorities to pay due attention to resolving their problems. Gharghakht High School Headmaster Barkatullah told Pajhwok Afghan News many teachers did not have own houses. He demanded land plots for such teachers.
In different parts of Khost City, hundreds of teachers have been allotted land plots. The authorities hinted at giving the facility to more teachers this year.
